The best My Quang in Da Nang is not where you think it is. Here’s why popular isn’t always better, along with my pick for the best My Quang Da Nang has to offer.

My Quang Da Nang

Mỳ Quảng comes from Quảng Nam Province, which Da Nang used to be a part of, and where Hoi An is. ‘Mỳ‘ is just the name of the noodle; it’s the wide, flat noodle. It’s served in a light broth, along with fresh greens, and usually topped with fish or shrimp & pork, although other toppings are common too. Good mỳ quảng should be buttery and smooth, with the flavors of the veggies and toppings popping off the broth background.

The Famous One: My Quang 1A on Hai Phong

It’s overrated.

There’s a nice ‘Goldilocks Zone’ for how dirty I like my mỳ quảng, and this place pushes it a bit far. I’m not talking about hygiene in the actual restaurant; I’ll happily drink out of the community tea cup as eagerly as the next guy. It’s more of a taste thing. Mỳ quảng shouldn’t taste ‘too clean’ but it shouldn’t be ‘too dirty’ either. This one’s a tinge too grimy. The ‘đặc biệt’ (= special bowl) comes with pork, chicken, shrimp and an egg, though the toppings could be more generous. I like a mix, but the shrimp just overpowers everything. The chicken tastes like shrimp, the pork tastes like shrimp. Even the broth tastes shrimpy. I will say that the noodles here are very good (possibly made in-house?) but for the best mỳ quảng in Da Nangmy heart belongs to another.

My Quang Ba Mua

Why is it good? Balance.

That ‘Goldilocks Zone’ from earlier? This place nails it. The restaurant itself is about as clean as you could expect. The noodles taste fresh but not sterile. The toppings are still small but they don’t taste like each other; each one adds something unique to the mix of flavors. The mixed bowl comes with fish, chicken, beef, pork, shrimp and eel, and they’re all great. No egg, but you do get a bánh tráng rice cracker to break up on top of everything. Also, compared with the jaded staff at My Quang 1A, the owner here is really nice, and can even speak a bit of English. To top it off, they have a great fresh juice selection, including carrot juice and fresh vegetable juice. Yum!
