I’m a huge fan of Vietnamese coffee. It’s strong and bold, and the super-sweet condensed milk is the perfect foil to the deep, roasty coffee flavor. On a hot day, I love a nice ice-cold ‘cafe sua da’ (coffee with milk on ice), but on those chilly, rainy season days, sometimes I just have to go for a warm ‘cafe sua nong’. Some places serve it in the regular coffee glasses, but for some reason I really like drinking it out of a shot glass. It’s a nice visual contrast to the ‘venti mocha espresso frapuccino latte with 3 pumps of vanilla’ that people drink back home. Less than an ounce of coffee with a splash of milk. Pair it with a nice hot tea, and I’m in heaven. Some places even serve it with the shot glass sitting in a bowl of hot water to keep the coffee warm. This cold weather won’t last forever (hopefully) so now is the time to order that ‘cafe sua nong’ before we’re back in the blistering heat of summer. Which I’ll be combating with glasses of ‘cafe sua da’.
