Com ga is simply chicken and rice (OK, literally ‘rice chicken’) and it’s a regular dish in my lunchtime rotation. It’s pretty famous in Central Vietnam, and Da Nang has it’s share of ‘must-try’ spots, including a couple on Hai Phong and the awesome Quan A. Hai on the corner of Thai Phien and Phan Chau Trinh. I eat at those places fairly often, but I still think my favorite com ga is Kimdy at 182 Tran Phu. It’s not the biggest portion, it’s not the most ‘local-looking’ place (they have an actual menu, with English even) but damn do they know how to roast a chicken!

When you pull up to the restaurant, you can see the birds turning slowly in the oven-thingy out in front. That’s how you know it’s good. The chicken is so juicy and tender. Also, the rice is flavorful and not too dry, though I still draw a couple lines of the ubiquitous orange chili sauce for good measure. Even the soup is great: light and buttery, the perfect way to wash down those last few rice morsels. And you will want to finish it all, I promise. To top it off, they’re open pretty much all the time, so next time you’re looking for lunch at 3 pm (when everything’s closed) give the com ga at Kimdy a try.
