Yesterday I had the pleasure of doing a custom food tour in Da Nang for Hanna and her boyfriend Jaakko, both from Finland. But this was no ordinary tour, because they knew what they wanted before they even arrived in Vietnam.

Creating a Custom Tour

Hanna first emailed me about setting up a tour in mid-April. Since then, we had been corresponding back on forth working out the details of the tour, the most important being which dishes would be featured. She told me she loved noodles and wanted to do something a bit ‘hardcore’ so we decided on a 3-course noodle afternoon featuring bún mắm, mỳ quảng and bún chả cá.

On the Tour

If you ask a Vietnamese person, they will tell you that bún mắm is ‘not suitable for foreigners’; the dark-brown fish sauce has a strong smell and taste that scares many people away. But as Hanna pointed out, they have something similar in Finland, and so she was right at home with the fragrant sauce. They loved the mỳ quảng as well, with the light broth, fresh veggies and delicate topping. The third dish on our tour, bún chả cá, is also sometimes considered ‘off-limits’ to foreigners, but then again, Hanna and Jaakko are no ordinary foodies; these two are cut from a special cloth.custom food tour in da nang

The reason Hanna and Jaakko were doing my tour in the first place, besides the fact that they love food, is because Hanna just so happens to be the most famous food blogger in Finland! If your Finnish is pretty good, you can read her write-up here. If not, you can still check out Jaakko’s awesome pictures.
