Travel tips, cultural anecdotes & local knowledge for living in Da Nang

Da Nang Drinking Culture

In Da Nang, eating food is inevitably accompanied by drinking beer. While Vietnam is home to some of the world’s most steadfast drinkers, Da Nang outperforms either Saigon or Hanoi when it comes to beer consumption. Unlike Saigon, Da Nang people start early, and unlike Hanoi, they finish late. If you Read more…

Tourism in Da Nang: seeking authenticity

While tourism in Da Nang is no longer considered ‘off the beaten path’, it is by no means ‘touristy.’ There’s still plenty of places you can go where you can meet and interact with real locals, who are genuinely curious about your life, where you’re from and inevitably your marital Read more…

Can you speak Vietnamese?

When I lived in Taiwan, people were always asking me “Can you speak Chinese?” Now, I’m white, and I certainly don’t ‘look’ like I should be able to speak Chinese. In Vietnam, where I actually can speak Vietnamese, I almost never get asked. But in Taiwan, where I couldn’t speak Chinese, Read more…

Ordering Seafood in Da Nang

Da Nang has great seafood, no doubt about that. But ordering seafood in Da Nang can be a bit tricky: navigating the restaurant scene, knowing what’s good, figuring out what it costs, how to order, and things like that. In a previous post, I gave an overview on Vietnamese food and eating Read more…

Sugar Cane Juice in Da Nang

The other day in Da Nang I was on receiving end of a totally unexpected act of kindness. It was around 9 pm, and my girlfriend and I were hungry, so we hopped on the bike to grab a quick snack. I pulled out of our neighborhood and onto the main street, clicked the Read more…

Last week my cousin and her friend came out for a visit. They only had a week, and they wanted to see and much as possible, so I thought “Why not hop on the bike and drive north?” Here’s a few of the highlights from our Da Nang to Hanoi Read more…

Vietnam Foreigner Price

Considering it’s long history if being invaded by other countries, Vietnamese people are surprisingly kind and generous towards foreigners. Just the other day, I was asking about the tea in a restaurant and where I could buy it. The lady patiently explained what this particular tea is called, how to ask Read more…

Hearing a Foreigner Speak Vietnamese

Despite the increasing number of expats in Da Nang, it seems people here still aren’t used to hearing a foreigner speak Vietnamese. Here’s a few of my favorite reactions I get when trying to order food. The Interview Me: (in Vietnamese) Can I have a bowl of noodle soup please? Waitress: *gasp* Read more…

A great insight into the local delights

We had been wanting to try some local food during out time in Da Nang but we're cautious as we had no idea what we were ordering or how to ask for it. Shaun took the hassle out of the experience and gave us great insight into the local food, providing us with an excellent morning tour around the city. It was great seeing the locals come alive as Shaun sparks up conversation in Vietnamese, providing another level of entertainment. Would definitely recommend if you want an informative, one of a kind experience sampling the local Da Nang delights. - Matt

Breakfast Local Style

Good food in great company, Shaun is showing you the real street food, wet markets and all the little corners you wouldn't go unless you've lived there for a while. Enough said, go experience it with my recommendation to do it with Shaun's Da Nang Food Tour...you won't regret it. Thanks a bunch, until next time! - Alex

Highlight of the Trip

You can be as culinary adventurous (or tame) as you feel comfortable. The food will be delicious no matter which way you lean, and you'll get a wonderful opportunity to sample local flavors. - Peter

Amazing Food Tour

We went on a tour with Anh and had an amazing time. All of the restaurants and food stalls we visited were outstanding. Anh was very knowledgeable, spoke great English, and was able to accommodate some picky eaters with special requirements. As the tour was in the middle of New Year celebrations, our guide was able to find restaurants that were open and met our needs. Our favorite dishes were the Vietnamese pizza and the BBQ mussels. Absolutely great night out in Da Nang! - Sam

Terrific Experience

What a delightful way to spend a morning in Da Nang. Shaun led us on a culinary tour that extended much beyond the beaten path upon which we had been treading. We happily ate a filling breakfast, excellent noodles, beautiful fresh juice made to order, strong coffee, and curious desserts. Altogether, we had a great time eating, learning, and chatting. I would definitely recommend taking the tour! - Janet

Thanks Sally

Let me start off by saying this was #1 the best tour I’ve ever taken worldwide! We sampled local noodle dishes, had an amazing seafood meal with squid, clams, scallops, frog, and stingray with all the beer we could drink, and ended the night at what Sally said was her favorite dessert place to try various local sweets. Definitely come hungry to this tour, you’ll be eating a ton of food!

Mind Blowing

We had the pleasure of being shown around by Anh, who had amazing banter, great local knowledge and exceptional English. He told us at the start that each place would be better than the last and wasn't wrong. Going off the main tourist track was a great move as it was awesome seeing how people actually eat here. We finished the tour absolutely stuffed and thoroughly mind blown. Anh even gave us the address for some amazing pho and banh mi for the next day too. A must do in Da Nang by a long long way. - Dylan
